One person is dead after a deputy involved shooting in the Upstate over the weekend. A Friday night welfare check turned deadly after a homeowner allegedly tried to stab an Anderson County Sheriff's Deputy.
According to Sheriff McBride, a family member requested a welfare check around 8 p.m. Friday at a home on Roger Drive in Pelzer. The responding deputy reportedly attempted to de-escalate the situation when a man later identified as 70-year-old David Vernon, Milton allegedly tried to stab the deputy with a screwdriver.
The deputy then shot Milton. He died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest. SLED has been called into investigate which is standard protocol in law enforcement involved shootings, statewide. The deputy was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
