The North Spartanburg Fire Department says several fire crews, including a hazardous materials team, responded to New Cut Circle Saturday, June 6, 2026, shortly before 1 p.m. after callers reported a trash fire.

When crews arrived, they found multiple large pallets of lithium-ion batteries on fire and in thermal runaway. [Thermal runaway is a self-sustaining chain reaction where an increase in temperature causes a system to generate even more heat.]

A total of five fire departments remained on scene for more than three hours as firefighters monitored the incident and allowed the batteries to burn out.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
