The Upstate's largest city is reporting that major in-roads have been made to reduce violent crime. The Greenville Police Department reports that violent crime has declined nearly 20% over the last three years. That includes a 43% reported reduction in the murder rate.
The city says it had 73 fewer violent crimes in 2022 as compared to the year prior. The department also says it has taken over 300 illegal guns off the streets.
Greenville Police Chief Howie Thompson said “The support and investments into the GPD have helped us maintain nearly full staffing over the past few years, which has been essential in providing excellent service and crime reduction.”
Mayor Knox White said of the crime rate reduction " I would like to thank our Chief and his dedicated officers for their proactive efforts to make Greenville safer. The drop in crime shows that our investment is paying off and the City of Greenville is truly one of the safest, most livable places in America.”
