Mexican Marines say they've detained one of the kingpins of the Gulf Drug Cartel accused of orchestrating last year's kidnapping of a group of South Carolinians.
They've identified Jose Alberto Garcia Vilano, as one of the gang that kidnapped the four South Carolinians, killing two of them, in March of 2023.
The four crossed into the border city of Matamoros from Texas in March so that one of them could have cosmetic surgery. They were fired on in downtown Matamoros and then loaded into a pickup truck.
Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodard died in the attack; Eric Williams and Latavia McGee survived. Most of them had grown up together in Lake City, South Carolina.
A 33 year old Mexican woman was also killed in the incident, apparently by a stray bullet.
