That South Carolina Sate University student first arrested for possession of a gun on the campus Tuesday is now charged with the attempted murder of a classmate. Orangeburg Police say he chased him into a glass door, firing at him all the way.
SLED is joining the investigation. Officials at the historically black University say the crime scene stretched from the second floor of SC State's Hodge Hall to a dorm entrance on the neighboring Claflin University campus.
The 19 year old student under arrest, Rolando Ifill, Jr. from Charleston, had confronted the victim, identified as Kamari Chiles, about a missing wallet. Campus police say they first got a call about gunshots in the academic building, and issued a shelter-in-place lockdown when they were also told more shots were fired a block away.
Chiles told Police he ran when Ifill pulled a gun during the argument, and was still shooting at him as he reached the entrance to the Claflin building; suffered a head injury when he collided with its door, and cuts from glass shattered by nine-millimeter slugs.
Ifill was picked up by campus police at a nearby church. He's charged with possession of a weapon in a violent crime in addition to attempted murder.
