Joining Audacy host Morgan Freed this week on Emo Nite is Mayday Parade's Derek Sanders, to fill us in on what the band is up to as they enjoy the success of their newest single "Kids Of Summer" -- and are about to drop another, "Bad At Love," on August 17.

Over the years as the "Emo" genre has gone from underground to hugely popular, there have been many (not naming names) bands and artists who have shied away from the term, opting to separate themselves rather than embrace the scene. Not Mayday Parade. "It was never discussed," Derek tells Morgan. "It's weird, there was a period of time where it kind of became almost like a bad thing, the term 'emo,' and this is going back, like, several years from the way I look at it. But, I don't know. I always considered myself an 'Emo kid,' and listened to so much of that kind of music in high school, it really kind of shaped a lot of who I am and obviously the music that we play and my career. So, I felt like it's a cool thing to embrace. Now especially, it's obviously kind of come back and swung around hard. There's all this nostalgia for it and this kind of resurgence for Emo bands... I think it's a cool thing, there's nothing wrong with it, and we'll happily call ourselves an 'Emo band.'"
Sanders was recently on hand to perform some acoustic jams at Sad Summer Fest in California, marking the very first time he's been on stage in front of a crowd in almost two years. "It was kind of nerve-racking," he says. "There was, I think, like 9,000 people there or something crazy. So to go out there by myself and do acoustic it was just like, 'alright, let's see if I could still do it.' It was just amazing to be around so many good people. We know almost all the bands on tour; it was almost overwhelming the amount of friends you see in one day after so long of not seeing anybody."
