From CNN to Superheroes, Surprising Firsts at The Oscar Awards

The 2019 Oscar nominations are in and from superheroes to CNN, it’s a year of firsts.

Here’s a look at some surprising facts about the 91st Academy Awards.

First up, “Black Panther’s” best picture nomination is one for the history books.

The film became the first superhero movie to be nominated in that category

Next up, fellow best picture nominee “BlacKkKlansman” was directed by Spike Lee, and believe it or not, despite his illustrious career, this is Lee’s first Oscar nomination for best director and best picture.

Netflix has already made an indelible mark at the Emmy Awards but now they are being recognized by the Academy Awards as well.

The streaming service made history after being nominated for “Roma,” directed by Alfonso Cuarón.

Also, for the first time, CNN Films is being honored with a nomination.

“RBG” earned a nod for best documentary feature. The film’s theme song “I’ll Fight” by Jennifer Hudson and Diane Warren was also nominated for best song.

And last by not least, while it’s not technically a first, it’s still notable that out of the 91 Academy Awards this will only be the second time the award show is without a host.

The first was in 1989.

Armed with these fast facts, we hope you’re the star your Oscar party.

Congratulations to all the nominees.
