USNS Mercy Ship Docks at Port of LA, Will See Non-Coronavirus Patients Saturday

The USNS Mercy has docked at the Port of Los Angeles and is ready to take on patients.

The ship will begin taking its non-coronavirus patients Saturday from all LA hospitals so the beds can be freed up for expected patients with COVID-19.

The ship, which came from Naval Base San Diego, is similar to the hospital ship that was sent to New York City, USNS Comfort.

The hospital ship, which stands at 900 feet long, has 1,000 hospital beds and hundreds of Navy medical staffers.

As of Friday LA County has seen 21 deaths with more than 1200 confirmed positive cases of the virus. Mayor Eric Garcetti says he predicts that Los Angeles is six to 12 days behind New York City and its rising and alarming increase in cases.

At last check, LA County had only 208 ICU beds open and 838 ventilators with another couple hundred on the way.

The ship will be docked for at least two months.
