Like pretty much everyone else, the movie and television industry is desperately trying to find new ways to keep business moving, make money and stay alive. We hear a lot about the 'thoughts' and 'considerations' for how live music can return, whether it waits until 2022, or if we're going to bubble-festivals.

While musicians can still make music from the comfort of their homes, movies and TV shows generally require many, many people, often in close quarters to create, and that causes a problem. Releasing movies into theaters nation-wide causes similar problems, driving many people into small rooms to watch them. Because of those issues and more, so many movie release dates and production schedules have been postponed.

Among the many releases that are being held off are Christopher Nolan's TENET, Wonder Woman 1984, Marvel's Black Widow, the new James Bond movie, and A Quiet Place 2. If this keeps up, Bill and Ted 3 might be the best movie to come out this year, being the only movie that will come out this year... though it might have been the best regardless. As for Disney, the release date for the live-action remake of Mulan was postponed 'indefinitely' just a few weeks ago.
They've decided to change the course and release Mulan straight to Disney+ for the new "Video On Demand" model, which is basically the "Straight To Home Video" model from the 90s, except that was reserved for really bad movies.

On September 4th, Disney+ subscribers will be able to pay $30 to 'premiere' the movie from the comfort of their homes, which is about the price of 2 tickets and a small popcorn at a normal theater. Speaking of normal theaters, this new VOD/Direct Streaming model could cause even more financial issues for movie theater chains that are already desperately struggling to stay alive.

A Disney executive says they are planning this as only a "one-off", and not as part of a new business model, but with over 60 million subscribers potentially ready and waiting for movies coming straight to Disney+, the release of Mulan could have a big impact on the future of how we get new movies.
