I'm Listening: Here Are Some Key Tips for Feeling Connected Again

How to acknowledge when you need to reach out

During a time when we’ve all experienced some form of feeling isolated, Dr. Chris Donaghue is swooping in to share some tips on how to feel connected as we lead up to our September 23rd I’m Listening broadcast.

During National Suicide Prevention Month and beyond, the I’m Listening initiative aims to ensure that mental health conversations are seen as commonplace and met with acceptance.

Dr. Chris explains that while staying in touch with others can be helpful, it is also beneficial to switch up who you’re reaching out to. In order to feel like you are having semi-regular social interactions keep a list of constant close people that are always reliable to chat with, but also create some space to catch up with those you don’t get to speak to as regularly.

Next, Dr. Chris encourages us to have deeper or more vulnerable conversations. “If we can be more vulnerable, and share our emotions, not only are we working on our mental health but that’s when we really feel like we’re building intimacy,” explains Dr. Chris. Connections form when we can bond over something special or converse about something that we might be struggling with. Regardless, it is beneficial to practice more engaging conversations over Facetime, on a phone call, or even over text, when our face-to-face interactions have drastically changed.
