With the I’m Listening September 23 broadcast being just two weeks away, we wanted to share some of Katy Perry’s important messages about finding your smile. The I’m Listening initiative supports the idea that talking about mental health with compassion and openness can truly save lives. Perry’s experiences that she sings about on her new album Smile are ones that listeners can deeply relate to.
The mega pop star explains that the concept of the album is about “finding my smile again and coming out of the darkest time of my life… I didn’t know if I was going to live to see the next day, and all the while I had to put on a happy face.” For Perry, this album acts as a reminder that she can get through her toughest moments.
With Katy being candid about the meaning of the album and the depth of lyrics, the musical mental health journey also serves as a connection point for listeners who might also be facing similar mental health struggles.
During our talk with KP, she delves into the idea that Smile is a personal “touchstone.” As she continues to move forward in her mental health process, Perry can always listen back to the collection of 12 songs on the new album and know that she harnessed the strength to find the right tools to emerge from a very difficult place. “I say to myself, I don’t know if I’m going to be depressed again, I don’t know if I’m going to go through it, but I have this touchstone to remind me that I came out the other end. I lived,” Katy powerfully speaks.
RADIO.COM’s I’m Listening initiative aims to encourage those who are dealing with mental health issues to understand they are not alone.
