East Texas is getting a new state park that will include hike-and-bike trails, campsites, and lakefront access.
The land is currently a 650-acre ranch at Lake Palestine which the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation purchased for more than $10 million.
The foundation will make improvements to the site before handing it over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in late 2027, according to CultureMap Dallas.
Anne Brown, the foundation’s executive director, said in a release, “Opportunities to protect a property like this don’t come along very often, and when they do, timing is critical.” She added that the land will “ultimately become a place where generations of Texans can enjoy the outdoors.”
The parks and wildlife agency plans to create the park in phases, starting with guided access, followed by daytime access and then full-day and overnight access.
