Big changes are coming to Alamo Drafthouse, and fans are none too pleased.
The Austin-based theatre chain announced that beginning in February, they would be doing away with their pen-and-paper ordering system in favor of new mobile-only ordering model.
Per WFAA, Alamo Drafthouse says the intention with this change is to “minimize distractions in its theaters,” and improve efficiency while "continuing to protect what makes the brand special: an elevated, immersive, and a more distraction-free way to enjoy movies."
Fans are not thrilled with the change though, as Alamo Drafthouse has repeatedly enforced strict rules against people using their phones during a screening.
One frustrated moviegoer wrote online, “"Alamo is the only theater we’ve gone to since 2017. 9 years of only Alamo with a season pass. We will stop going when cell phones are allowed throughout the movie. If I want to be on my phone on a movie I’ll just stay home.”
Another added, “Add me to the list of people that will probably cancel my season pass if you go to phone ordering in theaters. One of the main reasons I attend Alamo screenings is because of the lack of phones or talking allowed during movies."
Alamo Drafthouse says that the mobile ordering system will expand at select theaters in February and plans to roll it out at all of its 45 theaters nationwide throughout 2026.
