With the nation’s scrutiny of Flock Cameras at an all-time high, the city of Dallas has recently started putting AI cameras on their garbage trucks in order to monitor homes and spot any code violations.
According to NBC DFW, Dallas began testing these cameras in April and have captured images of tens of thousands of homes across the city.
Homes that were marked with at least one violation were given a “blight score” of 1-4, from least to most severe, and some homeowners have even started receiving code enforcement “courtesy notices” that could eventually result in fines if violations are not voluntarily fixed.
Homeowner Ty Willaims received a blight score of 2 after a truck camera detected a chimney paint issue and issued a violation. Williams, who guessed the camera spotted discoloration on his chimney that he thought might be mildew, said, “This is pretty wild to be a number two. I feel like they're making an issue out of nothing.
“It's a money grab. That's basically what this is all about,” he added.
City officials said in a statement that they only use blight scores "...as a way to prioritize detections" and "...as a way to help human reviewers..." who decide which properties get notices, adding that when the contract for the cameras was announced last year, the goal was to “save time and help officers detect violations more quickly.”
