The experience of flying on Southwest Airlines is going to be very different.

The airline already announced last year the end of their open-seating policy in cabins, and yesterday the company announced that after 54 years, they will also be doing away with their "bags fly free" policy.

According to the Dallas Morning News, customers will now be charged for their first and second checked bags unless they hold top-tier loyalty status or are traveling on a business fare.

The policy changes go into effect for flights booked on or after May 28.

Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan said in a statement that the changes "are designed to boost the airline's sagging profits and win new customers it doesn't currently compete for."

There's no word yet on how much Southwest will charge for each bag.
