City of Dallas considering restrictions on extravagant Christmas lights displays

Last year, a neighborhood in Dallas was overrun with visitors wishing to check out a home decorated elaborately for Christmas.

The streets were packed full of cars and pedestrians, and the display actually cost taxpayers more than $25,000 in police overtime.

As such, the city is considering placing some restrictions to prevent a similar event occurring this Christmas.

Council Member Gay Donnell Willis, who represents the area, said, "This isn't about being a Grinch—it's about being fair to everyone."

According to Chron, some of these restrictions include:

-Capping the number of visitors allowed to view a home's decorations over a specific timeframe (such as 100 people over a few days)
-Setting clearer guidelines on what qualifies as "excessive lighting" in residential neighborhoods
-And clarifying permit requirements for large house parties or events that attract public attention

Some councilmembers are opposed to these regulations, however.  Council Member Paul Ridley said, "I'm concerned that we end up becoming Grinches, stamping out anyone's holiday displays in an excess of zeal.

"There's a difference between light glare and large-scale disruptions."
