Dallas police officers are currently investigating a rise in car thefts recently that they have attributed to a popular trend on social media.
Officers told one victim, Steven Binko, that his car may have been stolen while he was out walking his dog around the Northstar Apartments on Forest Lane due to a trend on TikTok that highlights the ability of certain models of Kias and Hyundais that can be stolen easily.
Binko told FOX 4, "When I see that I think, how would you feel if someone broke into your car and I'm having a very hard time understanding."
The rise in theft of these Kias and Hyundais have prompted the car manufacturers to release free software updates and steering wheel locks for customers that will prevent further theft.
While Binko isn't hopeful his car will be found, he wishes to educate other car owners on his experience in order to prevent others from going through the same thing.
"I don't know somebody robbed me of my freedom, my safety, my peace of mind. They didn't just take a car," he said.
