The Dallas city council is moving forward with their plane to add hundreds of miles of bike lanes and trails within the city over the next couple of decades.
Presently, Dallas has 204 miles of bike lanes, shared lanes, and trails according to WFAA. The updated plan calls to add 27 miles of lanes over the next five years, with an additional 224 miles added over the next 20.
In a meeting earlier this week, council members called for a faster timeline in adding the additional lanes.
City council member Omar Narvaez said, "The concern is we are behind peer cities – how do we get caught up a little bit faster? I just want to make sure that the public knows that we're saying five years, but it doesn't mean it's going to take five years if we can possibly get the funding faster."
Officials say Houston has 518 miles of bike lanes, shared lanes and trails, Austin has 538, and San Antonio has 516.
Dallas' bike plan, first implemented in 1985, hasn't been updated since 2011.
