One of the more iconic stops in downtown Dallas is at 505 N. Akard Street, the mural known as Whaling Wall 82.
First painted in 1999, it features nine whales swimming underwater, and is the 82nd entry of artist Robert Wyland’s series of 101 “Whaling Walls,” meant to promote animal conservation, according to Paper City Mag.
The mural has oft been covered by advertisements over the years, but they’ve always been removed. It seems though a new, permanent change is coming.
Patrons and residents of downtown noticed the mural being painted over with the intent of replacing it with a new mural to promote the upcoming World Cup, which will hold nine matches in Arlington.
Residents voiced their frustration with the decision. One commentor wrote, “I want to know who the idiot that approve this.” Another wrote, “Dallas is a cultural wasteland.”
The FIFA World Cup kicks off June 11. The first match in Arlington will see Netherlands taking on Japan June 14.
