Usually when shopping at a thrift store, customers are looking for cheap, second-hand discoveries that the original owners discarded long ago. While most expect to save money by shopping at a thrift store, one customer may end up making money thanks to their extremely rare purchase. The customer, who purchased a painting for $5, recently discovered the painting was actually done by David Bowie and is now expected to be sold at auction for thousands.
The seller, who has not been identified, purchased the painting at a landfill donation center in Canada, only to later discover the distinctive David Bowie autograph on the back. The painting comes from a series of works that Bowie created between 1995 and 1997, according to Rob Cowley, president of Cowley Abbott, which is handling the auction. It is unknown who the painting is of, as Bowie painted friends, family other musicians, and self-portraits for the DHead series, but never identified his subjects.
The painting is expected to be sold for $7,000-$10,000, with the auction ending June 24, according to CNN. For the original owner, the painting ended up being a great find. Sadly, his next thrift store purchase will definitely not be as cool.
