It may seem like innocent fun at first, pointing a laser from the ground directly at an airplane flying overhead.

Actually it may only seem like innocent fun to the person actually pointing the laser.

It's incredibly dangerous though, for both everyone in the air as well as those on the ground, and the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a stern warning about these "laser strike" occurrences across the country.

Through their research, they found that California had the most laser strikes against aircrafts out of any state last year with 1,489.  Texas wasn't that far behind with 1,463 last year.

FAA safety aviation expert Kevin Morris said, "[It] creates a serious safety hazard that puts everyone on the plane and those on the ground below at risk."

According to NBC DFW, Texas has had about 168 laser strike incidents reported in the first two months of the year, with North Texas responsible for 50 of them.

The FAA says it works with law enforcement to track down laser pointers on the ground.  Violators can face hefty fines and even federal prison time.
