The Plano Police Department is celebrating the end of “Operation Mario Kart,” where $42,000 in cash and more than $100,000 in stolen video games accessory was recovered from a retail theft ring that stole from area stores.
According to WFAA, Operation Mario Kart was a collaborative effort between the Plano Police General Crimes and the Special Investigative Services Units, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Allen Police Department, Nintendo of America, and retail loss-prevention teams from Walmart, Target, and Kroger.
The operation began in 2025, initially thought to be a routine theft of gaming electronics and accessories valued at around $2,500.
However, Plano Police later learned the items were being stolen by an individual who buys stolen property and resells it for a profit and realized that these isolated incidents of theft were part of a major theft ring.
The investigation led the authorities to a house in Irving, where the cash and gaming accessories were recovered.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody for organized retail theft.
