Much has been made over the state of Dallas’ City Hall.

In fact, RoboCop himself Peter Weller called out the city for considering tearing down the historic structure, and the site of the fictional Omni Consumer Products headquarters in the 1987 film.

The building is in desperate need of repairs, but they won’t come easy.  Or cheap.

According to FOX 4, a new report from the Dallas Economic Development Corporation estimates that the cost for full repairs on Dallas City Hall could exceed $1 billion over a 20-year span.

The report states, “City Hall is a 47-year-old building with all systems past their useful life,” citing that the building's electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems are outdated and do not meet modern standard, the roof is falling in, and that the cost just to address those repairs would be $329 million.

The total cost to fully modernize the building would be between $906 million and $1.14 billion, including more than $100 million to relocate the building's staff for a five-year period and between $299-360 million in interest on 20-year financing.

The Dallas Economic Development Corporation said, “Fully updating City Hall will cost much more than corrective repairs due to required code and ADA upgrades, temporary relocation and financing costs.”
