Last month, the Fort Worth Zoo celebrated the birth of their largest elephant calf ever and have finally revealed him for the public to see.

Sam Houston, born April 1, has made his public debut at the Zoo, where he is available to be seen from 11am to 2pm, according to NBC DFW.

According to the zoo, Sam Houston’s birth marks an important milestone for Asian elephants as only 40,000 remain in the wild.

The zoo wrote, “Each birth is a step forward, reflecting decades of dedicated care and specialized expertise.”

Sam Houston’s name follows a tradition the zoo has where each elephant born at the zoo receives a Texas namesake name.

Avery Elander, director of communications at the Fort Worth Zoo, said, “We wanted to give him a name that really lived up to his size and his stature.

“He’s larger than life, just like Sam Houston was.”
