No trip to your favorite Mexican restaurant is complete without eating your weight in chips and salsa before your meal actually arrives.
In East Texas though, apparently a third ingredient is added to the mix.
This hasn't caught on with the rest of the Lone Star State, but apparently in East Texas it's common practice to mix butter in your cup of salsa before going to town on it.
A representative from The Jalapeno Tree in Tyler told Chron, "The practice of mixing butter with salsa has been around for quite some time in northeast Texas, and it's something we've noticed our guests at Jalapeño Tree enjoy.
"Although we didn't introduce this custom, it's become a popular choice for customers seeking a richer texture and unique flavor. Some people also say it takes the heat out of the salsa a little bit."
There have been numerus TikToks posted on the subject matter, with plenty of East Texans defending their right to butter up their salsa, but a Reddit post exposing the act has garnered a much different reaction.
One person wrote, "I do not associate with people who put butter in their salsa and I am as East Texas as you can get."
