Travelers flying through San Antonio International Airport will soon have to deal with TSA when it comes to security.
Last week, the City Council “hired” a 420-pound autonomous security robot from Knightscope to patrol areas of the airport!
Per MySA.com, Airport Director Jesus Saenz said the robots will not be used for surveillance of people, but instead for response to door alarms at the airport. The robot will reportedly only stay in secure areas and will respond by going to the doors that were opened and identify if the individual has a badge via a camera.
"We're not perfect and from our standpoint it allows us to be more efficient, more effective and improves the overall security posture of the airport," he said.
Stacy Stephens, founder and executive vice president of Knightscope, and a former police officer in Dallas-Fort Worth, says that Knightscope's robots have been used at other airports before.
"The robots are used across the country and in multiple different environments, including airports, to really address a public safety issue," he said.
"That's just trying to give law enforcement and security providers with more eyes and ears to be able to better secure areas and make those safer for visitors, guests, patrons and the like."
