There is nothing quite like those “Friday Night Lights.”
Immortalized in the popular film and television series, high school football is more than a sport in the state of Texas. For most, it’s a lifestyle. For some, it’s a religion.
Those looking in from the outside might be confused at the passion and fever with which men decades out of high school follow the sport, but for those in the Lone Star State, it’s just the way it is.
The circumstances between the three-way tie between Amarillo, Caprock, and Lubbock, all vying for a coveted playoff spot this year, led to something you would only believe if you saw it on TV.
Per Sports Illustrated, The school’s three coaches drove to a Plainview to settle the tie, not on the football field, but on the concrete of a gas station, and not with players giving it their all to move on to the next round, but a coin flip.
Yes, a coin flip at a gas station settled a three-way tie for Texas high school football playoffs.
Like we said, something you would only believe if you saw it on TV.
The results of the flip landed in favor of Amarillo, who are moving on to the playoffs. Caprock and Lubbock were left to pack their bags and prepare for 2026.
Amarillo coach Chad Dunnam told reporter Lance Lahnert, “We said if it’s God’s plan … and it’s God’s plan. We got a special group of kids. I hate this because I’m crying all the time. I’m an emotional wreck, but it’s God’s plan and we trust in him.”
