Last week, a woman shopping at a Chevron gas station in White Settlement noticed something unusual with an elderly customer.

Myndi Jordan told NBC DFW, "As I approached the ATM, the lady was standing here, frantically with a bunch of money, putting 100 dollar bills into the machine."

Jordan saw that the woman was on a video call with a man who was giving her various instructions and asking to see the ATM screen.  Jordan approached the woman, who appeared to be incredibly upset and adamant that she "had to do this."

The police were notified and when Sgt. James Stewart arrived at the scene and talked with the elderly woman, she said she was on the phone with her bank.

Stewart asked for the phone himself to talk with the "bank," and began speaking with the individual claiming to be a representative from Chase Bank security.

It was not Chase Bank, though.  It was a scammer, whom police would find out had been hounding the woman for days, and even arranged a rideshare for her to take her to the bank and even concocted a story for why she had to withdraw $40,000!

The scammer arranged another rideshare for the woman to a Bitcoin ATM where she was instructed to deposit all $40,000.  The woman had deposited $23,900 before the police intervened.

Despite Sgt. Stewart telling the scammer the woman would not be depositing any more money, the scammer was insistent and continued to provide instructions on what buttons on the ATM to press.  Stewart eventually ended the transaction.

Authorities were able to contact the ATM and arrange for all the money to be returned to the woman.
