Along with the arrival of Mars' brand new solo single, "Loyal To The Lie," the longtime and now former Mötley Crüe guitarist has announced his full-length, The Other Side of Mars, will be available on February 23.
Mars' decision to stop touring with the band he had been with his entire professional career came at the end of 2022 due to his ongoing health issues. It was a total surprise apparently, with Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx admitting the rest of the members “never saw it coming that Mick wasn’t going to be able to tour and was going to have to quit the band."
That decision to slow things down, obviously, excluded working on his own solo material, and it's safe to say Mick has been punching the clock with a fully clenched fist. "When it comes to my playing, there’s the Mötley side and the Mars side,” Mars explained, and “Loyal To The Lie” is certainly not your momma's hair metal.
Emmy Award-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Bunton of the bands Mars Electric (no relation) and LYNAM, provides the vocals for Mars on the first single, with the upcoming, 10-track record rounded out by bassist Chris Collier, Winger/former Alice Cooper keyboardist Paul Taylor, and Korn drummer Ray Luzier behind the kit. Third Mist singer and songwriter Brion Gamboa also contributes to two tracks on the full release, produced by Michael Wagener who engineered and mixed the Crüe's 1981 debut and has worked in the past with the likes of Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth, and tons more.
Given the Alt-Metal/Industrial vibe that can be heard on this first tease, it sounds like the rest of the album will be taking fans on a journey through the wild mind of Mars. "I wanted to do something that was just big and mean," Mars admits. "People are going to hear my tone — my sound. I am what I am. Nobody else can do it. And like everyone, I've got a limited number of years. So, I'm gonna do all I can to do a lot of stuff."
"There’s a lot of ideas that I have that, I don’t want to call them ‘left,’ but they are, you know what I mean?" Mars adds. "My feeling has always been, I might gain some fans, I might lose some fans. But what they’re hearing, it’s all me."
