It's been one year since a Halloween night mass shooting at an Airbnb in Orinda took the lives of five people. Family members have set up a memorial at a fountain in the city to remember the victims.

A shrine of flowers and signs that read “Orinda Remembers” have been placed along the edge of a fountain downtown.

Orinda Mayor Darlene Gee said it’s a tragic day in her city’s history.

“Such a terrible thing that happened in our very small community,” she told KCBS Radio.

The Halloween night shooting at an Airbnb home last year claimed the lives of Tiyon Farley, Omar Taylor, Ramon Hill Jr., Javin County and Oshiana Tompkins, whose family set up the memorial. Several others were injured.

Family members of the victims are seeking justice, after several people were arrested for the crime, but were released due to a lack of evidence.

The city has since put together a temporary emergency ordinance, giving homeowners guidelines to follow while offering short-term rentals.

“So, you have to be living on the property that you’re renting out and there has to be a two-night minimum stay,” Gee said.

Airbnb is attempting to ban party houses by not allowing one-night bookings during Halloween anywhere in the U.S. or Canada.

Gee said that while keeping the victims in her thoughts, she’s hoping for a much quieter Halloween night this year.

“I certainly hope that the families are finding some healing,” said the mayor. “We want them to know that our thoughts are very much with them.”
