PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Allegheny County Board of Elections is looking at what changes need to be made before a much larger voter turnout in November and are going to lobby Harrisburg for more time.

With turnout that could be in the 75 to 80 percent range for the Presidential election, county election manager David Voye would like to start counting mail-in ballots several days ahead of time.

And he wants the one week deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot moved up.

"Voter registration closes 15 days prior, I would have the date's coincide, have the last day to register and the last day to apply you know 15 days prior," said Voye.

Allegheny County anticipates returning to 1,300 polling places in November, not the consolidated number due to coronavirus during the primary.

Board of Elections member, Republican Sam DeMarco, praises the job election staff did counting ballots, but says he's heard of two areas of complains from voters.

"One related to 'I didn't get my ballot, never got my ballot, you know I called in', that's one area, the other area revolves primarily around training," said DeMarco.

County election officials say they need more time to process mail-in ballot applications and will resume training poll workers next month.
