PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - About 15 dump truck loads of muck are being removed from Lake Elizabeth in Allegheny Commons on the North Side this week.

It’s the fifth year that the Lake has been drained so volunteers can rake and dig out mud and debris.

Erin Tobin with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy says the team will work Tuesday and Thursday.

“It will never be as clean as it could be because there’s just so much muck, there’s inches of it at the bottom of the lake, in addition to the trash and debris that we pull out so  it’s quite a big job,” said Tobin.

The conservancy is joined by Allegheny CleanWays during the “What the Muck?!” event.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic those who want to volunteer are asked to bring their own tools, gloves and mask and safety protocols will be in place.

Only 25 volunteers are allowed on site per day.

This version of the lake was built in 1967 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
