PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Officials in Allegheny County are reminding residents to use 9-1-1 for emergencies only.
“We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, and that there are many questions, but we want to ensure that 9-1-1 is used for emergencies only,” said Chief Matt Brown of Allegheny County Emergency Services. “If you need immediate medical assistance, please call 9-1-1. But if you have questions about COVID-19, please call the county’s 24/7 COVID-19 hotline at 1-888-856-2774. If you have questions about your symptoms, please call your primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care physician, please call the COVID hotline.”
Anyone who wishes to report a business that is not following Governor Tom Wolf’s order to close non-life-essential businesses should contact their local law enforcement agency using its non-emergency number.
Anyone in a community without a local police department should call their nearest state police station.
The Pittsburgh Poison Center says they have seen an increase of 82 percent in hand sanitizer exposures in the last two weeks compared to the same time last year.
Hand sanitizers usually contain a large amount of alcohol and accidental exposures can be dangerous, especially for children.
Homemade sanitizers can also cause skin irritation if not made correctly.
The Poison Control Center also says there has been increased reports of toxic alcohols being ingested while state liquor stores are closed.
“Many individuals who struggle with alcohol use will look to alternatives when their primary source is not available. This has included drinking of household liquids that can be dangerous including antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, cooking oils, rubbing alcohol and even hand sanitizer as a substitute,” a release from the county states.
People who live with or are someone who struggle with alcohol abuse should be aware of these dangers.
If you have any questions please call the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
