PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - People with known heart disease should not be spending a lot of time in the cold weather.

They especially should not be shoveling snow; a person’s arteries can go in to a spasm, restricting blood flow to the heart muscle.

“That causes a heart attack. Heart attacks are exceptionally common in the winter,” said Dr. Indu Poornima, Cardiologist with Allegheny Health Network, during an interview with KDKA Radio on Wednesday.

The only way to know if you are at risk, is to know your body.

“For heart disease, there is no one-test as such to be done expect knowing your numbers, which includes: knowing your blood pressure, knowing what your blood sugar is, knowing your cholesterol numbers, and most importantly, knowing your family history,” Dr. Poornima explains

Your risk may be higher if you have a strong family history of heart attacks.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States.
