Flash Flood Warning Issued As Rain Snarls Morning Rush

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020) — A Flash Flood Warning was issued Thursday morning in Westmoreland and Washington Counties until 1:36 p.m. and in Beaver and Allegheny counties until 1:54 p.m. as emergency crews scrambled to close flooded roadways.

The National Weather Service is calling for up to 2.5 inches in the area. AccuWeather is forecasting strong storms Thursday afternoon, with more downpours and possible damaging winds.

Flooding closed roads around the region, including Route 65 in Leetsdale, Freeport Rd. in Aspinwall, Washington Blvd. in Highland Park, Thompson Run Rd in Monroeville, Becks Run Rd. in Baldwin and the ramps to the Mansfield Bridge in McKeesport.

Shaler Police asked drivers to avoid Evergreen, Seavey and Geyer Roads after the nearby creek overflowed its banks.

Flooding and ponding was reported along Allegheny River Blvd. near Washington Blvd. and in McCandless near Rt. 19 and Pine Creek Rd.

Crews monitored ponding along Rt. 28 inbound between the 31st St. and 40th St. Bridges, and on Saw Mill Run Blvd near the Liberty Tunnels.

Several spin-out accidents contributed to the slow commute, with officials warning drivers to slow down and be aware of hydroplaning.

There were reports of several vehicles stuck in water, with swift water rescue teams on standby Thursday morning.

Motorists should never drive through water.

Landslides were reported in the Elliott section of Pittsburgh along Noblestown Rd. and along the outbound side of Rt. 28 near the Highland Park Bridge.
