HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - State healthcare officials were at UPMC today to kick off “Stop Overdoses in PA: Get Help Now Week.”

The state-wide initiative aims to get more of the overdose reversal medication Naloxone into Pennsylvania households. State Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine says there will be free naloxone kits available at 95 locations across the state on September 18th and 25th.

“The surgeon general Dr. Adams has said that everyone is a first responder . . . everyone can save a life and so we’re trying to blanket the state with Naloxone,” said Dr. Levine.

There will be several naloxone distribution centers in Southwestern Pennsylvania, including 6 in Allegheny County.

“When someone is revived from an overdose, we can help move them into treatment and recovery,” Governor Tom Wolf said. “Without naloxone, we wouldn’t be able to help so many people suffering from opioid use disorder. With it, we are making a difference.”
