PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Giant Eagle is recalling onions due to possible Salmonella contamination.
The affected onions - red, white and spanish - both bulk and bagged, were sold as early as June 6 under the Thompson International/Onions 52 brand.
Customers who purchased the onions should dispose of them. Giant Eagle is offering a refund for those with a receipt.
In addition to the onions, Giant Eagle is also recalling a number of prepared food and deli products that contain onions. You can see a list of those products here.
According to their website, the Food and Drug Administration website and the CDC are investigating a Salmonella Newport outbreak across the country, which could be connected to the onions. Nearly 400 cases have been reported, including two in Pennsylvania. In addition, there have been 59 hospitalizations.
