LATROBE, Pa. (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Great American Banana Split Celebration returns to Latrobe this weekend.
The dish was created at the small city in Westmoreland County 115 years ago in 1904 by Pitt Pharmacy student, David Evans Strickler, while experimenting with some ice cream.
"He was being creative and used a banana which was an exotic fruit at that time, and created this banana split," said Briana Tomac, President of the Greater Latrobe Laurel Valley Chamber of Commerce, during an interview with KDKA Radio on Friday.
His original ingredients included:
One banana cut in half horizontally
One scoop of vanilla ice cream
One scoop of chocolate ice cream
One scoop of strawberry ice cream
Toppings:
Chocolate syrup goes on chocolate ice cream
Pineapple sauce goes on vanilla ice cream
Strawberry sauce goes on strawberry ice cream
Whipped Cream
Peanuts
Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers will be performing Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.
Everything will be taking place in downtown Latrobe.
