PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A new insect has made its way to the United States: The Asian giant hornet, or the “murder hornet.”

The queens grow to about two inches long, and the worker can reach up to an inch and a half.

“The first report of this thing coming to North America was about mid-August in British Columbia; and then, later in August, there was a report from a beekeeper in Washington State where they saw these things,” said Chad Gore, Entomologist for Ehrlich Pest Control, during an interview with the KDKA Radio Morning Show on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, most environments in the U.S. have a habitat that is suitable for these pests.

“If it even reaches us, it’s probably going to take quite a while. Unless, we get some help from people that unknowingly bring it in to our area,” Gore explains.
