PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - There are no plans for the North Hills School District to change its mascot from the Indians.

In a statement, the district says its top priority to opening safely for the next school year.

“While we appreciate the concern from those who have taken the time to reach out to us directly, we, like all school districts, must remain focused on safely getting our students and teachers back into the classroom in August.”

A transition from Indians to another mascot has been suggested in messages sent to leaders in the North Hills schools and on social media.

The district says while the topic is not on the agenda for the school board meeting on June 30 or any meeting in the near future, “we are fully open to working together to identify and combat inequalities that exist in our district to ensure North Hills provides a safe, caring and equitable educational environment for all, and we hope our new diverse and anti-racism task force will help us accomplish this.”

A school district in New Jersey Monday voted to change its nickname from the Indians to another mascot.
