PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is restricting alcohol sales to Ohioans in six counties to restrict Pennsylvania residents from buying liquor in the state.

Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Jefferson and Belmont Counties are ordered by the Ohio Department of Health to end selling liquor to PA residents in an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“This is necessary because of repeated instances of persons from Pennsylvania coming into these counties for the sole or main purpose of purchasing liquor. Any other time, we'd love to have visitors from PA, but right now this creates an unacceptable public health issue,” DeWine said on Twitter.

Liquor Update: In compliance with @OHdeptofhealth orders designed to prevent the further spread of #COVID19, the in-person sale of liquor in these counties will be restricted only to Ohioans:➡️ Ashtabula➡️ Trumbull➡️ Mahoning➡️ Columbiana➡️ Jefferson➡️ Belmont

Residents will have to present a valid Ohio photo ID or valid military photo ID for a person in active duty.

DeWine adds anyone with a non-Ohio photo ID can only make a purchase if the person shows proof of residence in Ohio, including mail with the person’s name and Ohio address on it , a bill with the person’s name and Ohio address, or a letter from an employer saying the person in Ohio is an essential employee.

Last week, New Cumberland County in West Virginia said they are only selling alcohol to state residents.

Pennsylvania has resumed liquor sales online only, but due to high demand, many have been unable to get through on the PLCB's site.
