PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh Public Schools parents are being surveyed on proposals for student transportation changes.
Citing a bus driver shortage, the district is looking at eliminating bus routes for students who live within a mile and a half of their school.
Another plan includes giving Port Authority bus passes to some middle-schoolers at magnet schools.
PPS Chief Operations Officer Pam Capretta tells KDKA Radio's Lynne Hayes-Freeland they are also looking at the safety of some of the walking routes.
"We are trying to make sure any of the walking distances would not be considered hazardous by the state because we would not want any of our students walking on a hazardous route," said Capretta.
Officials are also looking at shifting some schools' start times to use one bus for three routes.
