PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Board of Education will decide this week on a grading policy for students during remote learning.
At its Wednesday night legislative meeting members will choose between two options for the 4th quarter grading period. Both allow all students in grades K-5 to pass. Option A calls for a support plan beginning in August for students not engaged in remote learning. There is no summer school for those students under Option B.
For students in grades 6-12, Option A calls for students to be graded for the 4th quarter or to pass with 70%, which ever is higher. However, students not engaged in remote learning would get an incomplete with the opportunity to make up the work and have the "I" grade removed. Option B allows students to get the same grade they had in the 3rd quarter or 70%, which ever is higher. They would still have a chance to improve their grade but no incompletes would be handed out.
A district statement on the options says both. "fully support high expectations for student learning with special attention given to those students with high needs."
Parents are asked to submit an online survey on the plans by Tuesday, April 28 at 12 Noon. Parents may also submit written testimony for the board's virtual public hearing Monday, April 27 at 6 pm. Board members will consider the options Wednesday evening.
