Southwestern Pennsylvania is one of the worst places in the country for ticks, and now the Center for Disease Control and Prevention warns that a new invasive species of tick has made its way into the state.
Asian longhorned ticks first arrived in the western hemisphere in 2017, but now their presence is causing alarms.
The CDC says this new species of tick has been seen in 19 states, including Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
Dr. Mike Hutchinson of Animal General in Cranberry Township says this species of ticks can reproduce quickly.
“The females don’t need a male to reproduce and females can reproduce without the male, what a nightmare,” said Dr. Hutchinson.
He says the Asian longhorned tick can hide in tall grass and survive harsh conditions.
They have been blamed for the death of three cows in Ohio.
