It’s that time of year and Allegheny County leads the state in deer-collision crashes.

With deer becoming increasingly active for breeding the Pennsylvania Game Commission is advising motorists to slow down and stay alert.

Allegheny County recorded 309 deer-vehicle-related crashes in 2023, the highest number in the state, according to a PennDOT report.

Allegheny County also topped other counties with the most deer-related collisions from 2019 to 2023 with a total of 1,500.

The game commission states that when daylight-saving time ends November 3, there will also be increased vehicular traffic between dusk and dawn, the peak hours for deer activity.

A recent report shows Pennsylvania led the country in animal-collision insurance claims in the fiscal year 2023-24.

Drivers can reduce their chances of collisions with deer by staying alert and better understanding deer behavior.

Just paying close attention while driving on stretches marked with “Deer Crossing” signs can make a difference.
