The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a recent phone scam.

Mike Manko, communications manager for Sheriff Kevin Kraus says over the past 10 days their office has received a number of calls from residents reporting they’re getting calls from people identifying as personnel from the Sheriff’s office.

The calls appear to be targeting people with jobs in medical and education or others whose license for employment would be reviewed if they faced criminal charges.

“The elements of the scam are familiar with the bogus caller informing the potential victim that they have missed either jury duty or an order to testify in a case and are subject to arrest unless they pay a fine,” the Sheriff’s office said in a statement. The payment of the fine is always requested via gift cards or payment Apps such as Venmo and Zelle.”

If you receive a similar call, you are asked to call 412-350-4709 to report the scam to authorities.
