Some drugstore chains are limiting how much baby formula customers can purchase with a shortage reaching new levels.
Local mom Emily Wilson and her husband are consumed by the search for the products.
Their five-month-old son has a dairy protein intolerance. She says only about two formula products work for their family.
"There's been times when we go to the grocery store, and we race to the shelves, and there's been times where I just cry because the shelves are empty," Wilson said.
Fortunately, she says they're typically able to find a can or two eventually with the help of friends and family. Wilson is one of many moms feeling the impact of a formula shortage.
New data from Datasemly shows 40% of the top-selling baby-formula products were sold out as of two weeks ago.
AHN Pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Priess says it's been a perfect storm.
"There was a general recall with the Similac brand. I think it started in February. There was a bacterial infection, and I think in conjunction with the supply chain demand."
Priess encourages families to reach out to their pediatricians if they're having a hard time finding formula.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday the FDA is working "around the clock" to fix any shortages.
