A bipartisan bill would legalize recreational marijuana in Pennsylvania.

Nearly all neighboring states have legalized recreational adult use of marijuana, and if this new bill passes, Pennsylvania could join them.

House Bill 2500, sponsored by Republican Rep. Aaron Kaufer of Northeastern PA and Democratic Rep. Emily Kinkead differs from past marijuana legislation.

The bill would place a tax on cannabis products, which would fund several different agencies, including addiction prevention, recovery, treatment services, and local law enforcement.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will oversee the new program and allow for the taxation and regulation of Cannabis for non-medical purposes by Pennsylvanians who are at least 21.

The legislation also deals with expungements for those with marijuana-related convictions and being able to apply for resentencing or commutation.
