A woman from San Diego staying in Shadyside has been charged with criminal homicide and other charges in connection with the death of a newborn over the weekend.
According to a criminal complaint, 29-year-old Nicole Virzi was staying at an Airbnb when a 6-and-a-half-week -old boy fell from a seat on Saturday evening while she was watching him.
The boy bumped his head and died after the fall in the Shadyside apartment.
Virzi called 911 just after 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, telling dispatchers the baby had fallen and hit his head.
The boy’s parents reportedly took one of their other children to the hospital during the time of the fatal fall and were not present during the fall.
An expert told police the injures appeared to be not accidental.
Virzi was taken into custody on Sunday. She was denied bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month.
Court documents show she also faces three charges of aggravated assault and two charges of endangering the welfare of a child.
