The family of Jim Rogers and the city have reached a settlement over Roger's death after he was tased by police in 2021.
Attorney Todd Hollis announced the $8 million settlement in a news conference Thursday afternoon on Harriet Street in Bloomfield.
It’s the same street where Jim Rogers was tased multiple times during an investigation for a stolen bicycle.
Hollis says it’s the largest civil rights settlement in the city’s history, but money is only part of the solution.
“But if money is the only thing, change will never occur,” said Hollis. “This happened because the ringing issue is poor training and leadership (with the police).”
Rogers also outlined changes they would like to see in city policing. Hollis says there are plans to meet with the city about those changes within the next month.
